I stole my friend's respite spot. I know, I'm awful. The Boston Public Library, though some parts are beautiful and gothic, most of the library is similar to the cement based buildings of the 1970s. Danielle at A Work in Progress wrote about Brutalism architecture in a recent post. That is the BPL. But in between the divergent library wings is a courtyard, complete with gurgling fountain, flowers, plants and green. Now it's mine. Lunch hours are eased away in a seat by the fountain, book harmlessly held shut, eyes hesitantly closed and the city and work far away. After work, for a cool down, I sit and try not to worry about the next day. Do I read there? Hardly. I dream there. It is mine.

She claims she can no longer go there because I've stolen it. Why she can't continue to go there is beyond me, but I don't mind, I'll take it. For her it's a park bench on Comm Ave. among walkers, workers and wanderers passing as she tries to steal a few pages. I may also have workers and wanderers, but we are a chosen few who have selected this hideaway as our escape and relinquish it, we won't. You can find me there tomorrow too. And the day after.

I used to read in that same spot when I worked at the Pru two years ago. Please stop trying to make me feel homesick.

Oh! And may I also recommend the courtyard at the Prudential Center if you feel like a change? More people, but still pleasant.

I've been to the courtyard before, but I've only been reading there for a few months. Don't feel homesick. Boston's still Boston. Stubborn to change, but beautiful all the same. It's just here waiting for you just like you left it.

And thanks for the heads up on the Pru. I'll check it out Monday.

I tried to comment yesterday, but Blogger was being testy and ate my comment up!! The courtyard where you take your breaks sounds wonderful! It is nice to have a place to escape to! I am hoping that with our new addition at my library there will be somewhere attractive finally for me to sit when I need to get away. Anyway, there will be windows at least...a definite improvement!

Sounds fabulous - I need a spot like that. And I think I need to go and visit that one sometime if I get the chance to head down...

Danielle, every new library should take into consideration people like us who use it as a refuge from the outside world, if only for a half hour a day. I hope you have a courtyard of some sort to relax in, but windows would be nice. My office doesn't have windows or clocks. Welcome to the modern prison system.

Hi Jen, the library should definitely be a stop on your next visit to Boston. Take the tour, then sit and fall asleep for a while. I'll be the one passed out in the corner.

Cheers
